The anger of the Jungle

TITLE: The anger of the jungle

RECOMMENDED AGE GROUP: Level 1 (1º - 3º Primary)

CHARACTERS – OBJECTIVES:

LIONS. Arrogants. They walk slowly, making “royalty” gestures.
TIGERS. Arrogants. They walk as the lions, but they feel envy of them, so, when they see the lions, they make false gestures and fake smiles.
ELEPHANTS. Peaceful and quiet animals. Making typical trunk movements (use the arm as a trunk). They represent the respect and the equality. They are the common sense.
MONKEY. It is the innocence and the respect. They want to play with the tigers and lions, but they are “not allowed” to mix up with them.

SYNOPSIS

In the jungle live many groups of animals. Those belonging to feline family (tigers, lions, pumas…), are so arrogant and haughty. They believe that no one is above them, as well as they deserve all the respect from the rest of the animals. On the other hand, in the jungle there are also more animals like monkeys or elephants.

Apparently all these animals live in peace. The little whelps, as little children, go to school to study some rules and knowledge. The feline, sometimes laufh at the monkeys, because they think they are funny. On the other side, some elephants (respected by the lions because they are huge), don’t like that lions’ attitude, and they talk to them not to mock again to the monkeys. However, tigers and lions still did the same.

One day, from the deep jungle, a huge fire began to grow. The animals try to escape running. Even the tigers, lions and pumas, but they could not see any way to run away from there. Suddenly, one of the monkeys climbed up at the top of a tree, guiding all the animals there to find the way out.

In conclusion, we have to respect each other, and don’t make any difference, neither the appearance, nor the culture or origins. Another topic is, not judging without knowing the other.

SCENE BREAKDOWN:
SCENE 1: In the jungle, the different groups of animals are appearing. First of all, the Lions, then the tigers (making movements to identify them and gossiping about the lions). After them, the elephants come up, eating slowly and taking care of their little ones. Finally the Monkeys go, playing together.

SCENE 2: All the little ones go to school. They are preparing their schoolbags, clothes, breakfasts and so on. Doing the same actions but in their different houses. Normal scenes in the morning with their own parents.

SCENE 3: They go at school, and stay in class. In class, the teacher is explaining something when he lions and tigers laugh at the monkey. The elephant becomes so serious.

SCENE 4: In the playground, the monkeys try to play with the lions and tigers, but they are sitting under the sun doing nothing. So arrogantly, they say no and laugh at them. I one occasion, they pinch the monkeys’ ball.

SCENE 5: Going back to their homes, the monkeys telling the “incident” to their parent, and they feel disappointed as they don’t understand the reason.

SCENE 6: Next day at night, a huge fire begin in the jungle. The animals are afraid. The elephants talk to the monkeys what is happening. The monkeys go outside and see the problem. The lions and tigers are so scared than they don’t react.

SCENE 7: Suddenly, one of the monkeys talk to his brother and parents. He climbs up of a tree and tell to is brother how can they find the way to escape from there to the river. Monkey dad and monkey mum guide the rest of the animals. The two brothers help the little baby lions and tigers.

SCENE 8: Next to the river, all together exhausted and happy for being alive, say thank you the de monkey’s family and to the elephants. They regret for being so arrogant and not been giving the respect enough for the monkeys.

SCENE 9: (The end) Playing and studying at school all together.

  1. Hi!
I think this story is very appropriate for this age group. It is very easy to perform and children are very interested in animals, as a general theme. They enjoy a lot this topic.
The moral of this play is very clear and pupils can learn a lot about from it without even notice it. Respect is the key, so it would be great to teach them values.
I would not make any change, but I’d work a lot making a good scenery and special effects (sounds, music, lights…).
It could be developed for a theatre competition and, although there are many plays that teach about values, I think this is very original.

  2. Hi Esther! I also think this story is very appropriate for this age group. The moral of the story is clear and I think that all the children can relate to similar situations in their everyday life (in their classroom, in the playground...). I think that the students will learn to empathise with others and I think it would be a great opportunity to help the children realise how important it its to respect others because everyone has their own strengths and no one is better than anybody else. Preparing the scenery might be a bit difficult I think, maybe it would be better to keep the scenes simple (the same home scenery could be used for all the different families for example), but overall I think the idea is great! I could see this play being performed by my 2nd graders.
